Winter is peak season in Gudauri — and also when vehicle choice matters most. The Georgian Military Highway between Tbilisi and Gudauri is regularly cleared, but the Jvari Pass section (km 110-130) sees heavy snowfall, ice, and occasional closures during blizzards. Renting the right vehicle isn't optional — it determines whether you reach the slopes safely.
Summer in Gudauri is a completely different proposition — cool alpine temperatures, paragliding launches, mountain trail running, and the gateway role to Kazbegi and the Russian border at Verkhny Lars. The road is open year-round but driving is dramatically easier from June through September.
Higher altitude (2,200 m base), longer pistes (75 km), more demanding terrain. Better for intermediate-to-advanced skiers, freeriders, and travellers combining skiing with a Kazbegi road trip. International crowd, livelier après-ski.
Lower altitude (1,700 m base), gentler slopes (28 km of pistes), family-oriented infrastructure. Better for beginners, children, and travellers preferring quieter mountain villages. Closer to Borjomi for sulphur bath day trips.

In summer (May-October) a standard sedan is sufficient — the Georgian Military Highway is fully paved. In winter (November-April) an AWD or 4×4 vehicle with winter tires is strongly recommended, and effectively required during heavy snow on the Jvari Pass. All TripBox vehicles delivered to Gudauri in winter come with proper winter tires fitted.
About 2 hours in good conditions (120 km via the Georgian Military Highway). In winter, allow 2.5-3 hours due to snow, ice, and reduced visibility on the Jvari Pass. The route is well-maintained but mountainous — drivers unfamiliar with snow conditions should not attempt it at night without experience.
Occasional short closures (typically 4-12 hours) happen during heavy blizzards or avalanche-control work on the Jvari Pass. The road is rarely closed for full days. Check the Georgian Roads Department status before setting off, and TripBox hosts will warn you of any active restrictions at pickup.
Not normally, if your vehicle has proper winter tires (M+S or 3PMSF rated). Chains are required only during extreme conditions and on specific sections marked by Georgian road authorities. TripBox vehicles in winter come with chains included on request, free of charge with most hosts.
Both work. Most travellers pick up at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) or in Tbilisi city and drive themselves to Gudauri. TripBox also supports direct delivery of vehicles to your Gudauri hotel — useful if you arrived earlier by minibus and want to upgrade to a rental for the rest of the trip.

Yes — it's only 35 km and 45 minutes by car. Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is the easiest and most popular day trip from Gudauri. With your own car you can leave at sunrise for the Gergeti Trinity Church photo, visit the Dariali Gorge, and return to Gudauri by afternoon for skiing.
Generally no. The Verkhny Lars border crossing is 45 km from Gudauri, but insurance for Georgian rental cars does not extend into Russia, and most TripBox hosts prohibit Russia crossings. Cars rented in Georgia must remain in Georgia (with limited exceptions for Armenia and Turkey by prior agreement).
Most hotels and apartment complexes in Gudauri offer free guest parking. Public parking at the ski lift bases (New Gudauri 1, 2 and 3) is also free outside peak holiday weeks. Theft and vandalism are virtually non-existent — Gudauri is one of the safest Georgian destinations for vehicles.
Yes — there is a major chain station (SOCAR / Wissol) in Kobi, 10 km below Gudauri, with reliable petrol, diesel and LPG. For the route onward to Kazbegi or the Russian border, top up before leaving Gudauri — fuel becomes scarce after Stepantsminda.
