Ideal starting point if you land at Kutaisi Airport. You'll clear the lowlands faster and climb into the mountains without accumulated fatigue.

From Batumi

The road to Mestia is high‑quality asphalt or concrete. But mountain terrain dictates its own rules.

Road "kings": Svaneti cows and pigs nap on warm asphalt, often on blind curves. Keep your speed moderate on serpentines.
Falling rocks: In spring during snowmelt and in summer after heavy rain, small stones roll onto the road. Watch the surface carefully.
Gas stations: Fill up completely in Zugdidi. Mestia has modern stations (Wissol, Gulf).

1. Chalaadi Glacier

Perfect for the first day or a hike with children. The trailhead is 10–12 km from Mestia — accessible via a dirt road that any crossover can handle. Cross the hanging bridge over the Mestiarchala River, enter a pine forest, and the trail leads to the glacier's grand tongue.

Caution: Approaching the ice itself is dangerous — rocks frequently fall.

2. Koruldi Alpine Lakes

A trek for panoramic view hunters. The trail from Mestia climbs steeply through forest to the Cross viewpoint (2200 m), then onto alpine meadows reaching the lakes at 2700 m. The lakes are small, but their mirror surfaces reflect legendary two‑headed Ushba — every climber's dream.

Car hack: If you have a capable 4×4, you can drive the first uphill section from Mestia to the Cross via a dirt road. This saves 3‑4 hours of heavy ascent.

3. Ushguli & Shkhara Glacier

Ushguli is a community of four highland villages officially recognized as Europe's highest continuously inhabited place (2100 m). Instead of a four‑day trek, it's a 1.5‑hour drive from Mestia. The road is being actively concreted, but final sections are still rough mountain dirt — high clearance needed.

Leave your car among ancient Svan towers and walk the wide valley towards the roots of the Shkhara Glacier. Shkhara (5193 m) — Georgia's highest point.
