Why the Georgian Military Road is Georgia's most scenic route

  • Incredible landscapes — from green valleys to snow-capped peaks
  • 5+ iconic landmarks on a single route
  • Suitable for any car in summer (winter requires preparation)
  • Can be done in one day or stretched over 2-3 days with overnight stays
  • Free entry — no tolls or fees

💡 Planning tip: If you only have one day, skip Mtskheta (it deserves a separate trip) and focus on the Zhinvali to Kazbegi section. Leave Tbilisi no later than 9:00 AM.

Detailed guide to each stop

1. Mtskheta — ancient capital of Georgia

Just 20 minutes from Tbilisi lies Mtskheta — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual heart of Georgia. Here you'll find Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), where Christ's robe is buried, and Jvari Monastery (6th century) on a hilltop with panoramic views of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers confluence. Tip: If you're short on time, visit Mtskheta separately — it deserves 3-4 hours on its own.

2. Zhinvali Reservoir

The first "photo stop" on the route. An artificial lake with turquoise water surrounded by green hills. The best viewpoints are right after the bridge crossing the reservoir (don't miss the parking on the right). The water is especially vibrant in spring and early summer.

3. Ananuri Fortress

A medieval architectural complex from the 14th-17th centuries located right off the highway. The main structures are the Assumption Church with well-preserved frescoes and a defensive tower with the best view of the Zhinvali Reservoir. Free entry. Souvenir shops and restrooms available.

⚠️ Important: Don't leave valuables visible in your car. Small thefts sometimes occur at the Ananuri parking lot. Put phones, bags, and laptops in the trunk.

4. Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument (Gudauri)

A grand mosaic arch on a cliff edge, built in 1983 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Georgievsk. From here, you get a breathtaking view of the Terek Gorge and Mount Kazbek. Tip: Don't stop right at the monument — it's always crowded. Drive 100-200 meters further for less crowded but equally scenic spots.

5. Gudauri — ski resort

In winter — a skiing hub; in summer — a starting point for trekking and paragliding. If you have time, take the cable car (700 meters from the highway, then the lift) up to 3,000 meters. The views of the Caucasus range are stunning year-round.

🍽️ Where to eat: Gudauri has excellent lunch options. Try Kazbegi Good Food (national cuisine, khinkali from 1.5 GEL) or Sad Georgian (European and Georgian cuisine). Avoid roadside cafes right off the highway — lower quality, higher prices.

6. Cross Pass (Jvari Pass)

The highest point of the route — 2,395 meters above sea level. This is where the watershed between the northern and southern slopes of the Caucasus lies. In winter, the pass is often covered in snow, and winds can be very strong. In summer — simply a scenic photo spot.

🏔️ Historical note: The pass got its name from a large stone cross erected here in the 19th century to commemorate the road's construction. Today, a small chapel stands on the same spot.

7. Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and Gergeti Trinity Church

The endpoint of the route — the town of Kazbegi at the foot of the same-named mountain (5,047 m). The main attraction is Gergeti Trinity Church (14th century), located at 2,170 meters with Mount Kazbek in the background.

  • How to reach the church: 14 km uphill on a dirt road (30-40 minutes by car, high clearance required, 4×4 recommended) or on foot (1.5-2 hours uphill). Local jeeps can take you up for 20-30 GEL per person.
  • Best time to visit: At sunset, when the sun paints Mount Kazbek pink. Or early morning, before clouds cover the peak.
  • Photo tip: The best angle is from the north side of the church, where Mount Kazbek rises directly behind the altar.

Winter driving on the Georgian Military Road

From December to March, the road can be dangerous for unprepared drivers. Here's what you need to know:

  • Winter tires are mandatory by law from December to March.
  • Snow chains — strongly recommended. Even with a 4x4, chains can be a lifesaver after heavy snowfall.
  • Check the weather forecast before departure. During heavy snow or avalanche risk, the road may be closed.
  • Cell service: At Cross Pass and in some gorges, there's no signal. Download offline maps in advance (Maps.me or Organic Maps).
  • Drive during daylight — leave Tbilisi early and return before dark (or plan an overnight stay).
❄️ Winter warning 2026: Cross Pass often closes during heavy snowfall for several hours. Check road status on Facebook Roads Department Georgia before departure.
